Basics:

ü      Ask the salesperson to present the necklace on a flat, white surface. This gives you an exact idea to observe and find any faults in the pearls.

ü      Ensure that there is sufficient light to observe for any defects. It’s always a good idea to observe the pearls in daylight, avoid artificial colored lighting conditions. This is to be assured of the quality of the pearls you are purchasing.

ü      Ask for and observe the pearls with a magnifying glass that multiplies the original into 10 times. Using a magnifying glass facilitates you to observe the details more carefully.

ü      Look for grittiness (like sand), which is there only in original pearls. All the genuine pearls give the feel of grittiness in them. Whereas the fake ones are extra smooth in surface.

ü      Genuine pearls have a few blemishes or spots. Whereas fake ones are light, smooth in touch, and flawless to the naked eye. These can be easily seen with a 10X or more magnifying glasses. If you are still not sure, you can even ask for a microscope, which is mostly available with the jewelers.

ü      Pearls with pink overtone are costlier than the blue or the green ones. (Note: overtones are the second color within the pearl)

ü      Avoid pearls that lack luster and appear dull. Even with grittiness and blemishes all genuine pearls have gleam in them.

ü      Genuine pearls mostly give rainbow appearance. This is the easiest way to confirm the genuineness of a pearl.
